We were almost certain that this year’s unexpected turn of events would deprive us of something people around Malta love and look forward to so much year after year: the Malta International Fireworks Festival.
The main, The Nativity of Our Lady, Mellieha, 8 September, Musical concerts will be held on Monday and Tuesday in the square outside the church from 7:30pm while brass bands march through the town's streets on Wednesday and Thursday evening from 8pm. On the day of the feast which is generally on a Sunday, most of the parishes will have a procession. Their parish church will be fully decorated from the inside and outside.
The main feast day itself is characterised by a solemn mass at 8.30am or 9.00am, a band march and revelry at 11.00am, and a solemn procession at 6.00pm, followed by a final band march. It is amazing how many foreigners look at the details of this page wishing to participate in the local religious cultural feasts. Maria Bambina dominates the festa calendar this week with four towns celebrating the Nativity of our Lady. The parish church was built between 1641 and 1696 and its impressive baroque facade was added in 1738. The belfries and dome were added between 1920 and 1940 and the church was embellished with paintings by renowned Maltese artists including Giuseppe Cali and Lazzru Pisani.
The village of Xaghra is in full swing with celebrations for the feast of its Patron Saint, Maria Bambina, the Church being dedicated to the Birth of the Virgin Mary. Xagħra (Maltese: Ix-Xagħra) is a town on the island of Gozo in Malta.It is one of the earliest inhabited parts of Gozo, being home to the Ġgantija megalithic temples which date back to the year 3600BC and the Xagħra Stone Circle.Natural underground features such as Xerri's Grotto and Ninu's Cave can be found in this town, along with Calypso's Cave which overlooks the red sandy beach of Ramla. As the festa continues to build up on the eve, 7th September, two bands march through the streets culminating in a spectacular fireworks show starting at 10pm and finishing off with the mechanised ground fireworks synchronised to music from 11:45pm onwards.
