Drive up the road, number 5634, to Baker Lake trailhead.
Only 3/4 of a mile, but another well earned hike. I really wanted to make it to Trappers Peak. Driving Directions: From Darby go south on route 93 about 4.5 miles and turn right on West Fork Road.

If coming from the south on route 93, turn left at Conner and go 1.2 miles west to West Fork Road and turn left (south). I’m not gonna lie, I was a little bummed!
We made it to Baker, and it was well worth the steep hike up. I love mountain lakes, they’re just so pretty!

There is a good trail to Baker Lake then it is off trail to a ridge top that leads west to the popular trail that comes up from the south.
The human 4 wheel drive, and sometimes 5 wheel if you count the butt!
The trail was pretty well used by hikers, although it isn’t a Forest Service trail, so doesn’t pop up on the GPS. Always keep trying!
If you choose the lake, head left at the junction and travel downhill for roughly half a mile to reach the lowest of the Thornton Lakes. Head over to the base of the ridge to point TR5.
I miss the Bitterroot Range. The boulders were getting big, and harder to maneuver, but we gave it a hell of an effort! If you decide to scramble the peak, take the right fork and get ready to gain some more elevation. The climb to the top via the Gem Lake/Trapper ascent ramp was quick and surprisingly easy.

I’m all about pretty!
I will be back, I will make it to Trappers Peak. Soda Peaks Lake, formerly known as Lost Lake, is in the southern portion of the Trapper Creek Wilderness in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. It looked a little daunting, but the blog I read said it was doable…however, that blog was written back in 2010! It is about 15 miles north of the town of Carson. We took a break at Gem to enjoy the beauty, and have some lunch to recharge before scrambling up the mountain. The last picture below is looking back down at Gem Lake, we had gone a ways, but still had a ways to go. We climbed, and crawled, and rolled, and scooted, til we no longer felt this was a safe route to get to the peak. I got to see my pretty part of the hike that I wanted to see, so next time, we will head up the standard route, that isn’t as pretty, but will for sure get us to the top, where the views will make up for it all. This trail is not well defined, but the lake can be reached with adequate map reading.
But in 2017, I will be back! Also, didn’t really know what a “class 3 scramble” was, but it said no extra equipment, so we could do it…right? Hiking Directions: The well-used trail goes south up the ridge to a viewpoint at Baker Point then heads west up through the forest to Baker Lake, a popular destination. It was a long drive, so we left the house about 7 am, and took off to Darby, MT. Some we had to go under instead of over. Here goes nothing!

We made it to the trailhead, and started the steep decent up to Baker Lake. It said you didn’t need any extra equipment, just good shoes, and you’d be fine. I had just seen 3 amazingly beautiful lakes, I had hiked 3.5 miles with an elevation gain of 2700 ft!!!
