Without the Skyrim, what is empire going to do? Instead of just obeying, they started a war and caused the deaths of
Stormcloak by far, I dislike the Imperials with a passion. Ideally, you'd want to kick the Thalmor out of Skyrim, stop the Stormcloak rebellion, and fix the political situation with the Imperials. The possibilities.
Being the man to unite the Empire and gain victory over the Thalmor would grant him that right in the absence of an Emperor, just like Alessia and Tiber Septim in past eras.

@penderor: Dragons are a problem for both sides. It's a complex problem, and so you have to make the best of a bad situation. They do have a very defensible terrain, though. They are going to seed plants, grow a cattle, build new buildings destroyed in war, eat sweetrolls and let Dovahkiin to handle the military forces of Imperials and High Elves. I bet you could kill a dragon with a wood cutting axe. Skyrim suffered a lot because of the civil war, their cities and castles aren't all that impressive, they have a really weak leadership. The Empire's views are just far too different for the Nords of Skyrim. My first instinct upon choosing which side I would fight for was the Stormcloaks, seeing as they fight for the freedom of Skyrim and how the Empire has bowed to the Aldmeri Dominion and allowing them to outlaw Talos worshipping. They don't have the man power or weaponry to invade Cyrodil and the Summerset Isle, or even to defend Skyrim from the inevitable counter attack. Imperial armour sells for more, you can change factions at about 1/3 point, and re-arrange the Jarls and the council. There both the same tbh game play wise, Lorewise ive always felt the Imperials are better as ulfric treats the non nord races badly with him letting them get killed without trying to help.
