The Taw rises on Dartmoor some 40 miles to the south, so each river can sometimes offer quite different fishing conditions. The Salmon season runs from 1st March to 30th September.

Our own beat on the River Mole, within 2 miles of the hotel, is approximately three quarters of a mile of single bank fishing, with seven named pools, each quite different but all have yielded Salmon. Unfortunately I ended up spending to much time here, for several reasons, one was hope, two I knew from previous experience that this swim held big fish and thirdly snags, debris and the flow was hampering presentation.

On striking I initially thought this is only a small fish but then it decided to virtually do what it wanted and I quickly realised this was a good fish. RIVER MOLE - FETCHAM SPLASH Although this stretch has not been fished extensively over the past years, it holds a reputation for producing some excellent fishing. Over previous seasons we have seen Salmon caught locally as early as March and Sea Trout caught in April, with Salmon in the summer regularly up to 15lbs and Sea Trout over 4lbs.
