Amal Premier pilots have grooves on the ends. That leaves massive amounts of needle tuning which can really only be done by the person whose bike it is. Even though it ran fine in the middle possition, it runs throatyer it the richer position. The pilot fuel screw meters fuel, so turning it clockwise/in will lean the fuel/air mix, while turning it counter-clockwise/out will richen the fuel air mix. Let’s define the carburetor butterfly or slide the dividing line between the air box side, and the engine side.

It idles strong now with the mixture screw out 1 1/2 turns out. So, I checked out the float. As usual, the correct diagnosis is half the battle! A pilot air screw will be located on the air box side, while a fuel screw will be located on the engine side. Of coarse I have a timing light.

The flared roll pin was very poorly flared and jagged. I put a .019 idle jet in it, up from the stock .017, skipping the .018 because it was idling very lean. It was set about a 1/4in low. For example # 19 has 3 rings, does a #17 have 2 rings or 5 rings? If your fuel screw is in further than 2 turns, you need a leaner pilot. The engine was overhauled 10 years ago and still has great compression.

If these change, you may have to change jetting to suit. How could it be the coils? Oil being in the fuel has to change things quite a bit. There are carb models that have both a fuel and air screw, however I actually have never worked on one in 20+ yrs of wrenching. I've been a gear head for years but never messed with a carb, ever. Even though it ran fine in the middle possition, it runs throatyer it the richer position. Bendable tangs on the new style float worked to adjust it to where it ought to be.
