As a South Florida offshore fisherman I’ve used all of the larger models with up to 80 lb braid catching sailfish, wahoo, mahi, grouper, amberjack and more! It’s nice to know that the occasional dunk in the saltwater won’t ruin my reel (until I can rinse it off with fresh water, of course). The awesome Slammer III reels have a “7+1 stainless steel bearing system” and these new Spinfisher VI reels have a “5+1 sealed stainless steel ball bearing system”, and I don’t pretend to know if that will make any meaningful difference over time - but I do know that these Spinfisher VI reels are that bit lighter, they are wonderfully smooth so far (although they are a little “tighter” than a new Shimano reel when you wind a lure in), and I have filled both of them up to the brim with braid and have had no issues so far which I would never be able to do on the Clash. It tore when I removed the side plate to add the grease. Thank you.

I cannot believe how far this rig will cast. The most significant influences on purchasing this reel was the all-metal body and the IPX5 rating. Not for dunking in the water, but more than enough for surf fishing. If it helps, I have weighed the similar sized reels below when they are loaded up with line, because surely that’s the weight that means the most because surely you’re going to take a reel out fishing with line on it! Put them on a rod and go out fishing and the slight weight increase over a similar sized Shimano to me is now meaningless. Penn has added two new models to the Spinfisher line-up with the 2500 size and bailless 4500 size, giving surf, inshore, and offshore anglers a Spinfisher VI that will fit any application imaginable. My only real grumble is that the spool has an annoying habit of letting the outer coils of line spill over and get round / under the spool skirt, tangling round the main spindle. They will be passed on to my son some day. Penn’s line lay and drag are better than my Van Staal. Good for corrosion resistance, but not my type. Trust me that you can fill up the larger 3500 and 4500 Spinfisher VI reels to the levels you can see in the photos on here and if you can cast at least half-decent then you should have zero issues when fishing with a decent braid - but you need to drop the line level a fair bit on the 2500 size.
Please take note the word “if” in the title of this blog post. It really is an amazing reel for the price. There is another family of Penn spinning reels called the Spinfisher VI which are slightly cheaper again, and whilst they don’t offer quite the same level of protection against saltwater as the Slammer - the Spinfisher VI is quoted at “features IPX5 sealing so whether it gets hit with a wave, or you let it ride in the spray all the way home, you don't have to worry about saltwater getting into the gearbox or drag system” whereas the Slammer has “our new IPX6 Sealed System which keeps water out of the gear box and drag system” - in my mind these Spinfisher VI reels are some serious reels for some very sensible prices. When you reel up and start laying line over the gap in lays it can cause both distance as well as wind knot problems on your next cast. Was it worth the wait?? Spinfisher VI 4500BLS is a very nice reel. Purchased the 2500 then 4500 for a larger rod.Working great with no nesting of fishing line and smooth reeling with no worries of saltwater contact. I do err towards the Penn Slammer III 3500 as my go-to heavier duty spinning reel because it inspires so much confidence in me, but I have now fished with the Penn Spinfisher VI 2500, 3500 and 4500 reels enough to have formed enough opinions on them. Highly recommend this reel for the speed, power, and ability to get sprayed down with the hose at the end of the day. I guess that I will be switching over to all Spinfisher VI’s. These reels are built to withstand the saltwater elements. Withstands a lot of abuse from both the elements and dunking in saltwater. I use the live liner feature for surf fishing and it works great. This reel is the standard for all spinning reels. For sure these Penn Slammer III reels might not be the lightest reels in the world, but so far I can’t fault them and I wonder how many UK lure anglers are aware of these reels and how much toughness you are getting for your money. Easy hose spray hose down at the end of the day. I bought this reel the spinfisher v instead of the vi because it had more drag I bought the 8500 model and used 70lb line for grouper and it worked like a charm I also used it for shark fishing and I caught a 30-40lb bull he pulled me in waste deep water on a rock and the reel got dunked under water I didn’t reel underneath the water but I swam back to land that was 10 feet away and my reel still have me a smooth fun exiting experience and when I got home their was not a drop of water I am happy I made this amazing affordable purchase you should too penn rods and reels are a game changer.
